On September 4, 1929, James P. Porter, department chair
in the psychology department at Ohio University, and representatives from
10 other psychology departments signed a charter establishing Psi Chi,
the national honor society in Psychology. Today the Ohio University chapter
of Psi Chi is one of the more than 1,000 chapters at colleges and universities
throughout the country.
To become a member of Psi Chi, a student must satisfy the
following minimum qualifications.

Completion of 5 quarters of college courses

Completion of 14 hours in psychology

Major or minor in psychology or a related program

Rank in the upper 35% of class in gpa, a minimum
cumulative gpa of 3.0 in all coursework, and a minimum cumulative
gpa of 3.0 in psychology

High standards of personal behavior

Two-thirds affirmative vote of those present
