Mission of the Clinic

The Ohio University Psychology and Social Work Clinic pursues excellence in the training of graduate students through opportunities to engage in cutting-edge research and progressive treatments. The Clinic strives to emphasize the clinical application of psychosocial research in order to benefit the individuals and families in our community and region.

Service Overview

The clinic offers an array of services to the University community as well as to the larger community and region. These services include intelligence and neuropsychological assessment; psychological testing; health psychology evaluations; attention deficit/ hyperactivity disorder assessments; and learning disability assessment. In addition, the clinic provides individual therapy for children, adolescents and adults; marital/ couples and family therapy; and child management and parenting assistance.

Service Providers

Graduate students clinicians under the direct clinical supervision of licensed psychologist faculty members provide virtually all of the services offered through the clinic. As a result, the clinic is able to provide services at a dramatically reduced rate than would be charged in the private practice community. However, class schedules, training issues, and other challenges within an academic setting may limit the clinic's ability to address all requests for services.

Confidentiality

The Ohio University Psychology and Social Work Clinic recognizes that the therapeutic relationship is built on trust, and confidentiality is of the utmost importance in building and maintaining that trust. The Clinic provides the highest levels of professional standards regarding confidentiality as specified by the Ohio Department of Mental Health, state and federal laws, and the Codes of Ethics of the American Psychological Association and the National Association of Social Workers.

The PSWC is committed to protecting the privacy of client information, and as such we are compliant with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Clients will receive a copy of our Notice of Privacy Practices when they present for their first appointment.

Referrals

The Clinic receives the majority of its university referrals from Counseling and Psychological Services (CPS) at Hudson Health Center. Students also present for services directly to the Clinic, having learned about our services through a friend or course instructor. The Clinic also offers therapy services to members of the Athens community. These clients typically learn of our services through word-of-mouth. Referrals for assessment and evaluation come from local school districts, the Ohio University Office of Institutional Equity, the Athens County MRDD Board, Appalachian Behavioral Healthcare, Tri-County Mental Health and Counseling, Health Recovery Services, and private providers of mental health services.

Some clients will not be an appropriate match for services at the Clinic and a referral is necessary to a more suitable agency. Clients/situations the Clinic is not equipped to serve include:
