Jean Andrews is the Project Manager for our lab. She recently graduated from Ohio University with a Master’s of Science degree in Environmental Studies where she produced an award-winning documentary video, “A FOREST RETURNS: The Success Story of Ohio’s Only National Forest as Told By Ora E. Anderson”. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of California at Berkeley. Jean is interested in oral history and storytelling within Appalachia. She is the principal coordinator for Program ACTIVE (Appalachians Coming Together to Increase Vital Exercise).
Marcia S. Smart, R.N., B.S.N.
Marcia Smart is a 1973 graduate of Grant Hospital School of Nursing, Columbus, and Ohio University in 1988. She held the rank of Captain in the United States Air Force and worked as a nurse in the operating room and obstetrics arenas. She lives on a beef farm in Albany, Ohio with her husband.
Todd Doyle, M.S.
Todd is in his fourth year as a doctoral student in Clinical Psychology. He will serve as a cognitive-behavioral therapist for the upcoming grant-funded Program ACTIVE. His personal research interests include psychosocial factors (e.g. patient-physician communication) as they relate to cardiovascular disease risk, diabetes, and behavior change.
Jennifer Merrill, B.A.
Jennifer is in her third year of the Clinical Psychology graduate program. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Washington University in St. Louis in 2003. Jen is the principal graduate student for the ‘Caring for Diabetes’ research project, an educational intervention designed for patients with diabetes and their family members. She is interested in pursuing further research related to families and diabetes.
Belle Cancellare, B.S.
Belle has a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of Texas at El Paso. She currently works at the Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Affairs. Her interests include Health Psychology, and she is currently working on a coding project to identify themes associated with diabetes and depression in Ohio Appalachian populations.
Diane Turcotte, B.S.
Diane is in her first year of the Clinical Psychology graduate program. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and Psychology from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY in 2003. Diane is involved in many ongoing activities in the lab. She is interested in pursuing further research related to coping and diabetes self-care as well as time series analyses of cognitive behavioral therapy interventions.
Erin Rabieau, B.A.
Erin is a first year graduate student in the Clinical Psychology program at Ohio University, and received her Bachelor of Art degree in psychology from SUNY Binghamton in New York. Erin is spearheading the Diabetes and Depression Lab newsletter and is involved with data entry, participant screening, and general administrative work for the various studies investigated by the lab. She is interested in participating in clinical and research opportunities involving the psychological aspects of living with diabetes.
Laura Snelson
Laura is a senior majoring in both psychology and criminology. Her interests include clinical and health psychology. She plans to attend law school in Fall of 2008.
Claire Russell
Claire has just completed her junior year as an undergraduate psychology major. She completed an award winning poster for the Research and Creativity Fair entitled “Self-Blame, Autonomy and Depression in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes.” Her poster received First Prize in the Undergraduate Psychology session. This summer Claire is working in the lab and on her honors thesis. Next fall she will apply to graduate schools in clinical psychology with a concentration in health psychology.

Ali Gano
Ali graduated in June of 2007 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology. She is a first year graduate student at the Illinois School of Professional Psychology in Chicago in the area of clinical psychology.
Kristin Cornell
Kristin graduated in June of 2007 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology. She will be moving to Washington D.C. where she will pursue a Masters degree in school counseling.
Vanessa Shrontz
Vanessa graduated in June 2007 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology with a minor in history. She is planning to attend graduate school in psychology.
Carleen Risaliti
Carleen is a 2006 June graduate in Psychology from the Honors Tutorial College. Her senior honors thesis is titled, “Perceived Control and its Relationship to Depression, Adherence, and Social Desirability in Individuals with T2DM”. In addition to being a Cutler Scholar, Carleen was selected for the Outstanding Psychology Major award in 2006. She also received top honors in Psychology at the Undergraduate Research & Creativity Fair at Ohio University for her paper and poster presentation which was based on her honors thesis. Carleen is now attending Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington DC.
Leslie Markowitz
Leslie is a 2006 June graduate in Psychology and was the co-author of an award-winning poster presented at the Research & Creativity Fair at Ohio University titled, “Self-Esteem Levels and Doctor-Patient Communication” with Vanessa Shrontz. Leslie worked in the lab on the Longitudinal Pilot project also known as, “Psycholsocial Aspects of Diabetes Among Medical Patients in Athens County: 1 Year Follow-Up Study”. She will begin doctoral work in clinical psychology in the fall where she hopes to specialize in child psychology.
Charles F. Wheeler
Chas entered the Clinical & Health Psychology in 2003. His strong personal interests include helping others improve their life after having serious illness or injuries. He is now enrolled in a Master's degree program in Rehabilitation Counseling at Florida State University.
