Diabetes and Depression Laboratory

Dr. Mary de Groot

Mission Statement

There are 20.8 million Americans currently diagnosed with diabetes or 7% of the U.S. population. Rates of diabetes are over-represented in the southeastern Ohio Appalachian region. Depression has been found to be two times more likely in people with diabetes compared to the general population. The mission of the Diabetes and Depression Laboratory is to conduct research on the relationship and mechanisms linking diabetes and depression and to develop interventions that promote improved health outcomes for people with diabetes in the community.

Current Projects

Program ACTIVE (Appalachians Coming Together to Increase Vital Exercise)

This two-year study tests if implementation of an interdisciplinary treatment approach to depression utilizing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) or “talk therapy” and aerobic exercise in type 2 diabetes participants living in rural Appalachia. The impact of the intervention in depression and diabetes outcomes will be accessed. This project is funded by the National Institute for Diabetes, Digestive Diseases & Kidneys (#R34DK071545).

Pathways

This study is designed to examine whether depression is associated with markers of inflammation among women diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. The effect of major depression on inflammatory outcomes will be assessed. This study is funded by the Diabetes Research Initiative at Ohio University.

Defensive Pessimism and Anxiety

This study is an exploratory study to examine defensive pessimism as a moderator in the relationship between anxiety and glycemic control in adults with type 1 diabetes. Defensive pessimism is a cognitive strategy that anxious individuals use to manage anxiety. This relationship will be investigated prior to participants’ appointments with their diabetes or endocrine doctors.

Cardiovascular Risk Perception among Diabetes Expo Attendees

A pilot investigation, this study examines the degree of knowledge, appraisal and extent of patient perceived communication regarding cardiac risk among patients with type 2 diabetes attending an American Diabetes Association Expo Event in Pittsburgh, PA.

Depression Treatment Attitudes in Diabetes Study

The study examined patient attitudes and experiences with depression treatment among multi-culturally diverse patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes attending Diabetes Expo events. Participants reported high levels of depressive symptoms (30%) that were comparable across ethnic groups. Participants who had received treatment for depression reported high levels of satisfaction with medications, mental health providers and/or alternative treatments.

Caring for Diabetes

This project provided educational workshops for individuals with type 2 diabetes and their family members.

Completed Projects

Psychosocial Aspects of Diabetes Among Medical Patients in Athens County: A Four-Year Longitudinal Study

Over a four-year period, a sample of 201 participants were asked to share information about depression, self-care behaviors and feelings about diabetes. Findings from the study include:

  • 1 in 3 participants reported clinically significant depressive symptoms at baseline. This rate is similar to other studies of urban participants.

  • People (70%) reporting initial depression continued to experience depression symptoms up to 18 months after the initial survey.

  • Self-esteem and negative feedback from spouses are both related to depressive symptoms.

  • People participating in small group discussions reported understanding that family history is a primary risk factor for type 2 diabetes. Participants also reported depression stigma associated with seeking car from mental health care providers. Physicians were seen as a comfortable source of depression treatment (medications).
