Research Interests:
Dr. Anderson has published on the processes
and outcome of psychotherapy and the integration of research into clinical
practice. He is particularly interested in the therapist’s interpersonal
skills, the therapeutic alliance, and other indicators of interpersonal
process. Examples of studies include a designs in which therapist are
selected based on their level of common relational skills such as empathy,
persuasiveness, and social skills. Clients treated by therapist with high
Facilitative Interpersonal Skills had better outcomes than those clients
treatment by therapists with low Facilitative Interpersonal Skills.
He is also involved in the development and
application of existing treatments that integrate interpersonal and experiential
interventions. For example, he and colleagues developed a brief, experiential-based
treatment that uses emotional disclosure as the primary treatment task.
The intervention has been used with patients with rheumatoid arthritis,
survivors of sexual assault, and general college student samples. He was
awarded the Early Career Award for the International Society for Psychotherapy
Research in 2004.
