Research Interests:

Dr. Marcks’ research interests are broadly in the area of anxiety disorders. Her research focuses on cognitive and behavioral factors involved in the development and maintenance of anxiety disorders, and how results from such research can enhance treatment. Related to this work, Dr. Marcks conducts experimental psychopathology studies to further our understanding of anxiety disorders, with a special emphasis obsessive-compulsive disorder. Her research in this area focuses on the role of beliefs and avoidant coping strategies, such as thought suppression, in the escalation of intrusive thoughts.

In addition to this area of research, Dr. Marcks has an interest in core processes that cut across anxiety disorders, acceptance-based approaches, the efficacy of unified treatments, and treatment dissemination. Dr. Marcks collaborates with anxiety disorder researchers from other institutions, and is involved in two prospective, naturalistic longitudinal studies of anxiety disorders: the Harvard/Brown Anxiety Research Project and the Primary Care Anxiety Project. Her work on these studies focuses on identifying predictors of symptomatic course in anxiety disorders, such as medical comorbidity, as well as treatment characteristics and barriers for those with anxiety disorders. Dr. Marcks has also published on phenomenology and treatment issues related to Tourette Syndrome and trichotillomania.
