Recently I have used the SimNurse research simulation as a context for collecting data on goal-striving processes. The data is available for downloading (simdata4.xls ; warning, its about 2.5 MB). I also developed a model (below) representing my explanation for the behavior (i.e., an instantiation of the theory I am investigating). A working version of the model can be downloaded (four agents.mdl) and the software used to create and run the model (the learning edition of Vensim©) can be downloaded for free at http://www.vensim.com/. In a study to assess the validity of the model we found several participants for which an alternative model fit. The alternative model add a loop to optimize the budget goal (i.e., seek a schedule both below and near the goal level, not simple at or below). That alternative model is downloadable as well (alternative.mdl).
Believing Lewin’s statement that nothing is so practical as a good theory, most of my research is focused on improving our theoretic understanding of these phenomenon and humans in general. Indeed, I believe that to understand behavior we must have a thorough theoretical understanding of not only the individual, but also the environmental context--in particular organizational and social context. Understanding both elements (person and environment) and how they interact via behavior and information flow is needed to optimize methods of fit between the two.
Theoretically my interests and approach have led me to span disciplinary boundaries and embroiled me in debates and controversies about the nature of science and particular theories. Also, much of my work involves considering multiple levels of analysis simultaneously.
