General
Information
The Department of Psychology offers a diverse undergraduate program leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree. Requirements provide students with exposure to several a reas of psychology, while providing the opportunity for students to select courses to fit their needs and interests. Although a number of students major in psychology to prepare for careers in the field of psychology, others choose psychology as a liberal arts major. Psychology provides an excellent way to enhance career opportunities in a variety of fields and to gain an academic grounding for professional and graduate training.
The Psychology
Major
To major in psychology, the student takes one course in general psychology, one course in statistics, and one course in experimental methods. In addition, at least two courses are selected from each of four content areas designed to give a broad understanding of the field ofpsychology. The four areas are:
  1. Developmental, which includes courses in childhood and adolescence, adulthood and aging, behavior genetics, and childhood disorders.

  2. Experimental, which includes courses in learning, cognitive processes, psycholinguistics, physiological psychology, and comparative psychology.

  3. Clinical, which includes courses in personality, abnormal psychology, clinical and counseling psychology, and health psychology.

  4. Social-organizational, which includes courses in industrial psychology, organizational psychology, social psychology, and social psychology of justice.

Further courses may be taken to satisfy interests and career goals. In addition to courses in the Department of Psychology, students complete coursework in other departments to fulfill degree requirements. These requirements allow a fair amount of flexibility in course selection. Additional hours are used for elective courses. To complement the major in Psychology, students may choose to complete a second major, a minor, or a certificate program. Students are assigned an advisor in the Department of Psychology with whom they can work to develop an appropriate program of courses.

Psychology majors can build on classroom studies with numerous opportunities to apply principles and knowledge of psychology. Students can participate in research on a broad range of topics investigated by faculty members in the Department of Psychology. Students learn to design studies, collect data, and use computers for data reduction and analysis. For students who enjoy helping people, nearby community services and health facilities offer supervised experience with a variety of individuals in need of assistance, including children, the elderly, and the mentally ill. These opportunities provide students with work experience, as well as helping them to develop new insights and competencies.
Students who minor in psychology take general psychology, statistics, and at least one course from each of the four content areas of development, experimental, clinical, and socio-organizational psychology. (As described in the Psychology Major section above).
